AOL buy affiliate marketing network Buy.at for undisclosed sum

Buy.atAOL have bought affiliate marketing network, Buy.at, for an undisclosed sum in a move to boost the e-commerce offerings of AOL's online advertising services subsidiary, Advertising.com.

"This acquisition will be the first of its kind in the UK and reflects the strength and growth potential of the UK affiliate market," Buy.at said in a statement to its affiliates.

"The deal also validates affiliate marketing's position as a fast growing and increasingly important channel in the UK and we look forward to continuing to drive that growth one sale at a time."

Affiliate marketing networks bring together affiliates (also called publishers) with advertisers (merchants), with affiliates paid for delivering visitors to advertisers' websites. Unlike traditional display advertising or pay-per-click (PPC) models, an advertiser only pays when a visitor to its site takes a required action (such as making a purchase or signing up for a free trial).

Founded in 2002, Buy.at promotes over 200 ecommerce brands, including Sky, Marks and Spencer, and the AA.via its 6,000 affiliates. Turnover for 2006 reached approximately £19 million and the company emoploys more than 50 staff at its offices in Newcastle and London.
